Harmony, Balance, Love and Peace

The Word 'Reiki'?

As humans we enjoy Universal Life Force all around and within us. The Japanese word “Rei-Ki” (Ray-Key) consists of two syllables:

"Rei"

Which describes the Cosmic, Universal aspect of this energy, it can also be interpreted as higher knowledge, or spiritual consciousness. This is the wisdom that comes from the higher Self, connected to the Source, which is all knowing. It understands each person completely. ‘Rei’ knows the cause of all problems and difficulties and knows how to heal them.

"Ki"

Which means the Fundamental Live Force flowing and pulsating in all living things. As long as something is alive, it has life force circulating through it and surrounding it. When it dies, the Life Force departs.

We carry in us a certain amount of “Ki” that we consume in the business of ordinary daily life. Thus, we have to create a daily supply of new energy. When we are unable to compensate for the energy consumption for a prolonged period, we may become physically ill. If our supply of life force energy is very low and depleted, we suffer physically, mentally as well as emotionally, and tend to be much more irritable, bad-tempered, and depressed than usual.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gift from the Universe available to all of us.

Learning how to restore healthy energy levels by means of Reiki is an efficient way of self-healing for many health problems. Everybody can do this.

Reiki is a simple, direct and natural form of healing that allows you to absorb more life force by applying a gentle hands-on and hands-off technique. The energy flow can be received from a practitioner or you can learn Reiki for self application.

Reiki as a method vitalizes your Life Force and balances the energies in your body.

The natural healing energy flows in a powerful and concentrated form through the hands of the person providing Reiki. The positioning of the hands directs the healing energy into the body of the receiver (also called ‘channeling’). The Reiki practitioner (or yourself once you master the technique) is used as a channel to conduct the Universal Life Energy. As a result, no personal energy is drawn or drained from the giver, who in contrast will be simultaneously charged and strengthened during the session.

If you seek healing and are open and willing to let this healing power flow through you, then it is very easy to become a channel for the Reiki energy. Interestingly, even individuals very skeptical of Reiki experience the channeling of energy nonetheless, and often call it warmth, love or peacefulness.

Reiki induces and maintains healing of many deep-rooted issues and often relieves pains and acute symptoms very quickly. It also has a positive influence on spiritual growth. After a treatment, you may feel mentally much clearer and experience deep insights into particular questions or problems you are facing. Reiki can then help you to make the right changes and decisions in your life, bringing you to what you need or want to achieve.

Reiki affects each person differently, but it always acts wherever the receiver needs it most, simply by restoring the depleted level of life energy that was drained by that particular problem. As a rule, there are common effects that everyone experiences. They are simply a consequence of restoring the needed level of energy boosting not only a sense of well being, but a deep feeling of satisfaction and increased self consciousness.

The benefits of Reiki

Reiki involves your body, mind and soul and aims to integrate all these aspects into a harmonious balance. Reiki supports your spiritual growth, enhances personal awareness and intuition. Reiki generates relaxation and reduces stress, allowing the body to heal from within.

A major advantage is that in learning how to apply Reiki one is not dependent on others for healing.

Reiki is not a treatment that just addresses symptoms; instead it gives insight into underlying problems that cause unwellness in the first place.

Reiki will work in conjunction with any other treatment to relieve side effects and will promote recovery from illness, accidents and surgery. It engages self–healing capacities in many conditions like chronic fatigue, allergies, as well as in psychological problems like phobias, depression, anxiety, coping disorders and addiction.

Reiki is very effective in supporting individuals during life-cycle-related issues, e.g. infant problems, hyperactive children, puberty, relational problems and menopause. Importantly, it is a strong support system for gaining acceptance of the unavoidable. For example, being confronted with strongly impacting diagnoses (e.g. cancer, chronic diseases) and the acceptance of impending death/bereavement.

History of Reiki

Traditional Usui Reiki Ryoho

reiki founder dr usui

USUI Mikao Sensei (1865-1926)

Founder of Reiki Ryoho (healing method).

In 1915 Suzuki san starts her training with Mikao Usui. Many more followed over the years. His teaching has changed over the years. We do not really know when he started with energy work. In 1923 Mikao Usui introduced symbols into his teaching.

March 9th, 1926, Mikao Usui passed away from a stroke, while he was traveling, in Fukuyama in the Hiroshima Prefecture. Usui Sensei's grave-site and his memorial stone are located at the Saihoji Temple of Jodo-shu or the Pure Land sect of Japanese Buddhism in Tokyo. (In the West, Usui Sensei is said to be a Christian minister and president of the Christian based Doshisha University in Kyoto. Of note that he was from the beginning to the end a lay Buddhist.)

The five Precepts given from Usui are a guideline to aid students in their journey of spiritual development.

Reiki Principles/Precepts:

  • Today do not be angry
  • Today do not worry
  • Today be kind to yourself and to others
  • Today be honest to yourself and others
  • Today work diligently

HAYASHI Chujiro Sensei (1879-1940)

After his retirement from the Navy Mr Hayashi was initiated in 1925 into a Reiki Teacher by Usui Sensei.

reiki teacher takata

TAKATA Hawayo (1900-1980)

A Japanese-American born in Hawaii, was diagnosed with a serious gall bladder disease. She visited Hayashi Sensei in Tokyo and received Reiki treatment. Mrs Takata recovered completely. Then she worked for Hayashi Sensei as a Reiki student for about one year before returning to Hawaii. Hayashi sensei visited Mrs. Takata in Hawaii in 1938 and initiated her into a Reiki Teacher.

The Reiki lineage

Reiki lineage refers to the line of Reiki Masters that leads to the student. For traditional Reiki the line begins with Usui Sensei and continues with one of his Reiki Masters, and then to one of theirs, and so it continues. For a healing system to be called Reiki and be recognized as such, some people belief that the lineage must traced back to Usui Sensei.                           Our Reiki lineage is depicted below.

Reiki Training

Everyone can learn Reiki.

Reiki is very easy to learn and yet can make a big difference in your life. Reiki is transferred from a Reiki teacher to the student by an “Attunement” during Reiki training. It allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of Life Force Energy to improve his or her health and to enhance quality of life. Once attuned, you can channel Reiki through your hands and treat yourself or assist others.

The major advantage of learning how to apply Reiki is that one is not dependent on others for healing.

Your hands are most likely to experience temperature changes when practising. This is the effect of the Reiki energy flowing through your hands. The person receiving Reiki (that can be you giving yourself or the person you give Reiki) will feel relaxed as the energy reduces physical, emotional and mental stress. The person receiving feels often warmth coming out of the hands of the giver.

Traditionally, Reiki training is a stepwise process, passing through the 1st and 2nd Degrees, then the Master and Teacher levels.

You are free to progress from one Degree to the next if you enjoy Reiki and experience inner personal growth.

Reiki training can be quite emotional and intense, that is why all my Reiki training is conducted in small groups or 'one-on-one'. Also, as my student I guarantee your comfort and wellbeing. I will always be there for you if you need me. I carry out  debriefings and follow-up meetings and/or online conferences with all my students as part of the training package.

There is one point I cannot stress enough: you will be a healer for yourself, however you will be a 'tool giver' or a 'facilitator' for others. What I mean by that is that people heal themselves with the energy they receive and you are the person that makes that achievable for them. You show them the way to heal, and by giving the Reiki energy and supplying them with the Life Force Energy they then use it to heal themselves.

If after reading this, you are interested in learning Reiki, please feel free to contact me – I look forward to hearing from you. I am a qualified Reiki Teacher in the Usui Reiki Ryoho system and  the founder of Live-Reiki.

With each Reiki level you achieve, you will receive a Reiki certificate that formally acknowledges the Reiki training and the Attunement you have received.

Follow-up

About 6 weeks after Reiki training, the group will meet again in a 2 hour session to share experiences and to discuss questions that may have come up. As part of the ongoing support I offer you can email me anytime with your questions.

First Reiki Degree

The First Reiki Degree takes 2 days of intensive training (online 2x4 to 5 hours). This involves theoretical (history, backgrounds, Reiki Precepts, ethics, how, why, where and when to use Reiki, chakras, etc) as well as practical hands-on teaching.

Following the first Reiki Degree Attunement, Reiki energy flows through your hands and you can then give Reiki to yourself and to others.

You are able to use the Reiki energy for cleansing and energizing food, water, crystals, a room and more. You will be able to bring positive energy into a meeting or a large group of people. Your newly gained skill has many purposes and it is a really great tool to have.

The First Reiki Degree includes a follow up after 6 weeks (2 hrs, time and day agreed with the group) where we discuss changes you will have experienced and further clarify questions that have surfaced.

If, after the training, urgent matters or questions arise, I can always be contacted or you can ask your questions on the Live-Reiki Forum. This limited access internet forum gives my students a very safe environment to share experiences and discuss Reiki and general spiritual questions. I also suggest a Reiki buddy for personal sharing and exchange of energy. The Forum can be helpful in that too.

You should never perform a Reiki Treatment against someone's will, as this violates Reiki Ethics and may lead to undesired effects. A person receiving the Energy should be willing and ready to receive it.

Second Reiki Degree

This Degree also takes about 2 days (online 2x 4-5 hours) intensive training and is available to those who are practising Reiki at the First Reiki level for at least two to three months.

The Second Degree Reiki Attunement enhances the energy still further. You will be introduced to three Reiki symbols and the corresponding mantras, a powerful tool to gain more introspection and expand the use of the skills as learned in the First Reiki Degree.

The first Symbol (Power) is used to increase the power of Reiki or to focus Reiki on a specific location. The Power Symbol can also be used for the protection from potential hazards or threats.

The second Symbol (Mental, Emotional and Addiction) gives you access to hidden regions of consciousness, be it your own or of a person you treat. Mental healing can help you to transform misdirected energies so that the receiver can experience optimism, love, and happiness. It is here that healing for addiction and unwanted habits can be applied (e.g. smoking/alcohol/gambling cessation and obsessive thoughts/preoccupation).

The third symbol is an essential part of the Second Degree. It lets you send healing energy and mental messages over a distance. This is similar to commonly experienced telepathic phenomena as we all know them, e.g. you think of a friend and at that very moment this person calls you. Reiki energy can be transmitted that same way but more effectively and stronger. The 'receiver' and the 'sender' experience the treatment as if it were a treatment given one-on-one in the same room. With the distance healing symbol you can also work in the past, present and future.

It is my opinion that you make explicit use of your intuition when applying Reiki symbols. Each Symbol has lots to give and you will find out how to use them in your daily life. Most students describe a strong increase in awareness of their intuition and how to use it for their benefit.

The Second Reiki Degree includes a follow up after 6 weeks (2 hrs, time and day agreed with the group) where we discuss changes you will have experienced and further clarify any questions that have surfaced.

Reiki Master (sometimes referred to as Degree 3A)

Becoming a Reiki Master is the next step after having reached the Second Degree. With receiving the Reiki Master Attunement you will be fully opened up to the Reiki Energy. The training takes 2 days and is available to those who are practising Reiki at the Second Degree level for four months or longer. Experienced use of all the Reiki symbols learned with the second Degree is a must.

It is vital that you have worked a lot on yourself. In my opinion it is not necessary to have worked a lot with Reiki on other people to be able to achieve the Reiki Master level (it is a definite requirement for the Reiki Teacher though, see next chapter).

Becoming a Reiki Master involves the introduction to another, very strong Symbol. With this Master Symbol you will feel completely integrated with your inner-self. You will also learn to perform the Heart Attunement on yourself and on others. From this stable platform you will be able to introduce others to the practice of Reiki and advance to Reiki Teachership.

The Reiki Master Degree includes a follow up after 6 weeks (2 hrs, time and day agreed with the group) where we discuss changes you will have experienced and further clarify questions that have surfaced.

If after the training urgent matters or questions arise, I can always be contacted or you can ask your questions on the Live-Reiki Forum. Reiki Teacher (sometimes referred to as Degree 3B)

Some Reiki Masters want to take on the high responsibility to introduce others to the wealth of Reiki.

Before taking your Teacher training you and I will discuss what you expect / will learn in the class and what your intentions are as a future Teacher. It is a serious step that requires adequate preparation, and you need to feel motivated and ready for it. Extended experience with practice in Reiki Degrees 1, 2, and Master is required and the experienced use of all the Symbols is a must. This usually can be done 1-2 years or later after the Reiki Master Degree is obtained.

The path to Teachership is demanding and I will only have one or two students in training at any given time.

The training will take several months and you will have the possibility to sit in with my other classes. If you learn the Teacher Degree online you can be an observer in the online classes. My Teacher students find this very helpful as group dynamics vary so much and the questions are different each time.

It is understandable that being a Reiki Teacher is only an achievable option for those that have reached a complete inner serenity and are 100% comfortable with the energetic interactions between themselves, others and the environment.

The Reiki Teachers I have trained have the option to come to our regular meetings. These meetings alternate between being held my place and live online sessions. These meetings are important for all of us to share experiences and to give support as a peer group. You will never be alone, even during your Teacher level training. It is great to work together and to learn from each other. There are always new things to share.

Being a Reiki Teacher is an enormously rewarding experience. The possibility of training Reiki Masters to become Reiki Teachers themselves helps this effective healing method to spread to benefit so many in need.
